CALL: Samarbeta 022 Music Residency 15.07.24



Dates: 10th-20th September 2024


Outcome:  Live presentation at Salford Museum & Art Gallery on Friday 20th September as part of the opening night of Fat Out Fest. Time and format (installation, performance etc) to be agreed.  


A music commission to create new work through a residency in response to the Hybrid Futures exhibition at Salford Museum and Art Gallery.  The exhibition is the culmination of a three year project consisting of a series of exhibitions across the North West of England featuring new work and commissions by visual artists Shezad Dawood, Jessica El Mal, Parham Ghalamdar and RA Walden that address the urgent thematic focus of climate change.


Hybrid Futures is a partnership between Castlefield Gallery Manchester; Grundy Art Gallery Blackpool; Touchstones Rochdale; University of Salford Art Collection; and Shezad Dawood Studio, exploring collective and more sustainable ways of working that will influence how the partnership commissions, exhibits and collects new work by visual artists to benefit and be more relevant to their audiences, now and in the future.  


This open call is looking for a musician(s) to respond to the Hybrid Futures themes and/or work created by the visual artists, to create a new live presentation to be premiered in Salford Museum and Art Gallery on the opening night of Fat Out Fest. The format (performance, installation, show) is to be agreed with the venue and Curator of University of Salford Art Collection.


The Opportunity:

  • Up to a 10 day residency at Islington Mill, SMAG & University of Salford 

  • Live performance at Salford Museum and Art Gallery for Fat Out Fest 2024

  • Facilitation and technical support from Samarbeta & IKLECTIK 


The Criteria: 

  • An outcome that responds to the Hybrid Futures themes which include

  • The climate crisis

  • Sustainable and regenerative ways of collective working

  • Collaborative learning

  • Distributed leadership

  • How creativity can shine a light on these issues and create solutions

  • And/Or an outcome that responds to the artist’s work in the exhibition:

  • Shezad Dawood

  • Jessica El Mal 

  • Parham Ghalamdar

  • RA Walden

  • Music needs to be the centre of the project but we welcome and encourage cross artform performances/collaboration. 

  • Samarbeta encourages collaboration, especially with local artists in Greater Manchester. 

  • This opportunity is open to musicians at any stage of their career 


What we are Offering: 

  • £2000 to cover artist fee, live performance & travel.

  • Accommodation and Hospitality for up to 4 people (two double rooms) for up to 10 days at Islington Mill (N.B project can facilitate more collaborators but only provide sleeping provisions for 4 people sharing 2 double beds)

  • A rehearsal space to work within at Islington Mill and depending on availability in the University of Salford.

  • One to one sessions with IKLECTIK focusing on spatial audio as a compositional practice, developing practitioners’ skills and knowledge to work with ambisonic tools.

  • Depending on availability, potential access to University of Salford’s world leading facilities and academics including Acoustics, Music and Performance, Art Collection and Makers Lab.  Please note that as the residency coincides with Welcome Week access may not be possible.

  • Facilitation, technical support & production budget to help your ideas come into fruition.

  • Monday 29th July – All applicants informed of the outcome

  • Tuesday 10th-Friday 20th September – Residency at Islington Mill

  • Friday 20th September – Performance/Exhibition at Fat Out Fest

How do we decide? 

The Samarbeta & IKLECTIK team will shortlist a selection of 10 applications. This shortlist will be assessed by a selected panel of tastemakers & partners from across the UK, including from the University of Salford Art Collection on behalf of the Hybrid Futures team, who will score the applicants. The individual assessor scores will be combined and the applicant with the highest average score will be invited into the residency.
