Owain Llwyd is an award-winning and versatile composer, arranger and orchestrator working across concert music, film and television with an extensive portfolio of commissioned concert work and contemporary collaborations.

Owain came to prominence as a composer by winning all five Composer’s Medals in both the Urdd National Eisteddfod and the National Eisteddfod of Wales between 2002 and 2005 – the only composer to ever have achieved this accolade.

Owain graduated with a First Class Honours Bachelor of Music degree in 2005 from Bangor University where he studied under esteemed composer Pwyll ap Sion and for which he was awarded the Sir John Morris Jones Prize for the highest degree mark University-wide following a final recital performance of Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Bangor University Symphony Orchestra. Owain was subsequently awarded a PhD in 2010 for his research and portfolio of music for moving images. As a pianist, Owain holds a Dip.ABRSM, and he has won the prestigious Blue Ribband Instrumental Award at the National Eisteddfod of Wales.

From 2010 to 2019, Owain held a Welsh Government-sponsored teaching fellowship at Bangor University, where he established new disciplines in film orchestration and composition for film and media whilst also supporting the next generation of concert composers through his instruction in acoustic composition. Owain also founded one of the few University Session Orchestras in the UK – the ‘Bangor Session Orchestra’.


Owain’s concert work has been performed by world renowned performers including Catrin Finch, Claire Jones, the Black Dyke Brass Band, Iwan Llewelyn-Jones, O Duo, Côr Meibion Llangwm Male Voice Choir, and many others.

Owain gratefully acknowledges the Arts Council of Wales, Ty Cerdd, National Lottery Funds and PRS Foundation for their support throughout his career.

Beyond concert work, Owain has an extensive portfolio of commercial music work that has been successfully used in TV and film having been recorded in the world’s top recording studios by many of the world’s leading orchestras. Owain has also collaborated with global dance brand Ministry of Sound, international artists including Ricky Gervais, Gabrielle Aplin, Hannah Grace, Reuel Elijah, and popular Welsh Language pop artists including Swnami, Yr Ods, Mr Phormula and Casi.

Mae Owain Llwyd (g.1984) yn gyfansoddwr, trefnydd a cherddorfaethwr o Lyndyfrdwy, ger Corwen, sy’n gweithio yn y meysydd cyfansoddi ar gyfer y neuadd gyngerdd a ffilm a’r cyfryngau gyda phortffolio eang o ddarnau comisiwn hyd gydweithrediadau cyfoes.

Gan arddangos doniau cerddorol a chreadigol yn ifanc iawn, enillodd Dlws y Prif Gyfansoddwr yn Eisteddfod yr Urdd dair gwaith - yng Nghaerdydd a’r Fro (2002), Ynys Môn (2004) ac am yr ail waith yng Nghaerdydd (2005) - ynghyd â Thlws y Cerddor yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Maldwyn a’r Gororau (2003) a Chasnewydd (2004); yr unig gyfansoddwr i gyflawni’r gamp.

Derbyniodd radd BMus gydag anrhydedd dosbarth cyntaf yn 2005 gan astudio o dan adain y cyfansoddwr a'r Athro Pwyll ap Sion. Enillodd gwobr Syr John Morris Jones am un o’r marciau uchaf drwy’r Brifysgol yn dilyn ei berfformiad radd o Consierto i’r Piano Rhif 2 gan Rachmaninov gyda Cherddorfa’r Brifysgol. Fel pianydd, mae ganddo Dip.ABRSM ac enillodd y Rhuban Glas Offerynnol yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Tŷ Ddewi (2002).

Aeth ymlaen i gwblhau PhD ym maes cyfansoddi ar gyfer delweddau symudol yn 2010, gan dderbyn ysgoloriaeth addysg uwch gan Mantais, cyn ei benodi’n ddarlithydd ym Mhrifysgol Bangor drwy’r Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol hyd 2019. Sefydlwyd disgyblaethau newydd mewn cerddorfaeth ffilm a chyfansoddi ar gyfer ffilm a’r cyfryngau ochr wrth ochr gefnogi’r genhedlaeth nesaf o gyfansoddwyr y neuadd gyngerdd. Sylfaenodd un o’r nifer prin o Gerddorfeydd Sesiwn y D.U., sef, Cerddorfa Sesiwn Prifysgol Bangor fel hwb addysgiadol amlddisgyblaethol i’r myfyrwyr dysgu am y gwaith tŷ ôl recordio cerddoriaeth ar gyfer ffilm a’r cyfryngau.

Mae’r profiadau lu yn y maes wedi cynnig cyfle i gyfansoddi ymron pob genre iddo, gan gynnwys darnau cerddorfaol, corawl, unawdol, bandiau pres, ynghyd ag opera mewn addysg (Prospero) ac opera gymunedol (Cofi Opera). Perfformiwyd ei gwaith cyngerdd gan berfformwyr adnabyddus byd-eang gan gynnwys Catrin Finch, Claire Jones, Band Pres y Black Dyke, Iwan Llewelyn-Jones, O Duo, Côr Meibion Llangwm a nifer eraill.

Cydnabyddir Owain gefnogaeth gan y Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru, Tŷ Cerdd, National Lottery Funds a PRSF Foundation drwy gydol ei yrfa.

Tu hwnt i gerddoriaeth ar gyfer y neuadd gyngerdd, defnyddiwyd ei gerddoriaeth mewn rhaglenni ffilm a’r cyfryngau amrywiol a recordiwyd ei gwaith mewn nifer o’r stiwdios recordio gorau’r byd gan rhai o’r cerddorfeydd gorau’r byd. Mae Owain hefyd wedi cydweithio yn y maes poblogaidd gyda’r Ministry of Sound, artistiaid megis Ricky Gervais, Gabrielle Aplin, Hannah Grace, Reuel Elijah a bu’n gyfrifol am drefnu nifer o ganeuon gan Casi a grwpiau pop Swnami, Yr Ods, Yws Gwynedd a Mr Phormula.
