John Hardy 1957

John Hardy is a composer whose concert and operatic music has been described as 'utterly engrossing' and 'unique' by the Guardian, 'witty' by the Independent, 'gripping and intensely theatrical' by Opera Now, and 'energetic, instinctive' by the Times. His commissions include substantial choral, operatic and instrumental works for organisations such as Welsh National Opera, DV8, BBC National Orchestra & Chorus of Wales, Music Theatre Wales, BBC Concert Orchestra, Brith Gof, Test Dept, Odinteatret, and Westminster Abbey.

Awarded five BAFTA Cymru awards for 'Best Original Soundtrack Music' with a further five nominations, John Hardy is experienced in the art of writing original music for film and other media such as television, theatre, dance, visual arts and other forms of collaboration. He has written original music for over 350 productions including films, drama series, documentaries and broadcasts viewed worldwide. These include the Oscar-nominated film Hedd Wyn, America The Story Of Us for History Channel [USA], Wild Wales for BBC2, and The Secret Life of Birds for BBC1 Wales.

In April 2010 John became Head of Contemporary Music, Composition and Creative Music Technology at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He continues to work actively as a creative artist, in collaboration with a small creative team of highly trained and flexibly-minded young composers, all graduates of RWCMD. Recent collaborative projects include [with National Theatre Wales]: The Persians, Coriolan/us, Soul Exchange, {150}, Iliad, & Storms. Recent film and TV projects include Steel Country [starring Andrew Scott], Hinterland / Y Gwyll [BBC4/Netflix/S4C], 1917 – Countdown To Revolution [BBC2], Andy Marr’s The Men Who Invented Scotland [BBC2], and Craith / Hidden [BBC4/Netflix/S4C].
