Composer of the Month

Leona Jones

Leona Jones is a sound-artist whose work combines location recordings, site-responsiveness and improvisation, as well as text, in order to highlight physicality and context.

Cross-disciplinary collaboration is central to her practice and she works with performers, musicians, visual artists, the public and academics. Leona believes that the art of Listening is vital to society and her work challenges the current culture of visual bias by using Listening as the cue whilst acknowledging we are multi-sensory. Leona's aesthetic is informed by strongly held principles which she articulates in the manifesto she has written for our Composer of the Month coverage.

Leona's work has reached a growing audience across Europe over the past few years. In 2023 she received the prestigious international Grant Prize of the Karl Sczuka Prize competition for radio art for her installation babblesnatch. Read her composer's commentary and listen to an extract in Leona's babblesnatch feature.

Recent projects have included a commission from the international clown and physical theatre performer Denni Dennis to create the soundtrack for Jeg, Hamlet which was performed in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Next month she will spend two weeks in Baden-Baden mixing, mastering, and completing a soundscape which was commissioned by German public radio station SWR. Leona writes in Pulled out of the calendar's net about her travels which have led to encounters with some inspirational music.

CYM

Mae Leona Jones yn artist sain y mae ei gwaith yn cyfuno recordiadau lleoliad, safle-ymatebol a gwaith byrfyfyr, yn ogystal â thestun, er mwyn amlygu corfforoldeb a chyd-destun.

Mae cydweithio traws ddisgyblaethol yn ganolog i’w hymarfer ac mae’n gweithio gyda pherfformwyr, cerddorion, artistiaid gweledol, y cyhoedd ac academyddion. Mae Leona yn credu bod y grefft o Wrando yn hanfodol i gymdeithas ac mae ei gwaith yn herio’r diwylliant presennol o duedd weledol trwy ddefnyddio Gwrando fel y ciw wrth gydnabod ein bod yn amlsynhwyraidd. Mae esthetig Leona yn cael ei llywio gan egwyddorion cryf y mae hi’n eu mynegi yn y maniffesto mae hi wedi’i ysgrifennu ar gyfer ein darllediadau Cyfansoddwr y Mis.

Mae gwaith Leona wedi cyrraedd cynulleidfa gynyddol ledled Ewrop dros y blynyddoedd diwethaf. Yn 2023 derbyniodd Wobr Grant ryngwladol fawreddog cystadleuaeth Gwobr Karl Scizuka am gelf radio am ei gosodwaith babblesnatch. Darllenwch sylwebaeth ei chyfansoddwr a gwrandewch ar ddarn yn nodwedd babblesnatch Leona.

Mae prosiectau diweddar wedi cynnwys comisiwn gan y clown rhyngwladol a pherfformiwr theatr gorfforol Dennis Dennis i greu trac sain ar gyfer Jeg, Hamlet a berfformiwyd yn Almaty, Kazakhstan. Y mis nesaf bydd yn treulio pythefnos yn Baden-Baden yn cymysgu, meistroli, a chwblhau seinwedd a gomisiynwyd gan orsaf radio gyhoeddus yr Almaen SWR.Mae Leona yn ysgrifennu yn Pulled out of the calendar's net am ei theithiau sydd wedi arwain at ddod ar draws cerddoriaeth ysbrydoledig.
