Andrew Powell studied composition with Cornelius Cardew, piano with Malcolm Troup, percussion with James Blades, and attended Stockhausen’s and Ligeti’s composition classes at Darmstadt prior to reading music at King’s College Cambridge, where he was a founder member of the group “Intermodulation”, with Roger Smalley and Tim Souster, which premièred several works by Stockhausen. He subsequently worked with Boulez and the BBC Orchestra, whilst also working in the “rock” field as arranger and producer for artists such as Kate Bush, Al Stewart and Alan Parsons. He has written film and TV music and a catalogue of concert music.
