Kathy compressedThe National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales and its conductor Pete Harrison are looking for the best young Welsh musicians for its exciting 2017 programme. This includes a performance at Swansea University's newly opened Great Hall of contemporary works including a major new commission by Ty Cerdd's Composer in Residence, Rhian Samuel and also George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.

Orchestra members will be selected at auditions held throughout the country in November. Please read carefully the notes below before you clicking on the application form on the bottom of the page.

2017 SEASON
This year's residential course will be held at Monmouth School for Girls in April. During the intensive week of rehearsals our team of expert tutors will prepare the young musicians for a performance in Swansea.

Saturday 15th - Friday 21st April RESIDENTIAL COURSE (Monmouth School for Girls)

Friday 21st April CONCERT (Great Hall, Swansea University)

Players must be available for all course and concert dates. Please check your availability before applying.

COST OF MEMBERSHIP
The total cost of the 7 day course is £330.00, to be paid in three instalments - a small application deposit, second payment in December 2016 and final payment in February 2017.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
We are keen to ensure that no-one is deterred from applying for the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales for financial reasons. All applications for assistance are treated in strictest confidence.

REQUIREMENTS
• Candidates should have been born in Wales and/or received their secondary education in Wales.
• Candidates should be between 12 and 21 years old (or 22, if still in full time education) on 31st August 2017.
• Candidates should normally be of around Grade VIII standard though they do not need to have taken the exam.
• Candidates must be available for all course and concert dates. Please check your availability before applying.

AUDITIONS
During the 10 minute audition you will be asked to perform
• Own choice piece (with piano accompaniment)
• NYWOW Study (to be sent to applicants prior to audition)
• Set scales and arpeggios (to be sent to applicants prior to audition)

Those who are also offering a doubling instrument (eg. cor anglais or contrabassoon) will be asked to perform a short piece on this instrument at the end of the audition.

Percussionists will be auditioned at a separate NYAW session. (Those percussionists who are also applying for the NYOW and NYBBW will only need to audition once.)

AUDITIONS ARE FREE OF CHARGE but you are required to pay £30.00 as a deposit. This payment will be returned to you following your audition or deducted from your course fees should you be offered a place in the Band. If however you fail to attend your audition you may forfeit the payment.


DEPOSIT
When applying for membership, you will be required to pay a deposit of £30.00 which will be deducted from your overall course fee. This money will be refunded to you if you are not awarded a place in the Orchestra.
