A choristers experience- performing at the BBC Proms
Hello! My name is Aled Wyn Thomas and I am 20 years old. I come from the village of Llanwnnen, near Lampeter and have represented Ceredigion as a member of the National Youth Choir of Wales since 2009. During my time with the Choir, we have performed at a range of venues, including major churches and cathedrals and at a number of different music festivals, including the prestigious BBC Proms in 2009 and 2012. Both Proms concerts were very special as in 2009, we kicked off the last week of the festival by singing Handel’s Messiah to celebrate the 250th anniversary of his death. Last year, we were lucky enough to perform Leonard Bernstein’s Mass for the first time in the history of the Proms.
This year promises to be the most exciting in the Choir’s history as for the first time ever, we will have the honour and privilege of performing at the opening night of the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, one of the world’s most prestigious music events. We shall be joining forces with other choirs from across the UK to form a massed choir of 450 voices to sing Ralph Vaughan Williams’s A Sea Symphony. I think I can speak for all the members when I say that this year will be the most memorable yet for the Choir!
