Côr y Gleision Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Gleision Cheltenham

Côr y Gleision have recently completed their tenth anniversary year with a memorable trip to Bruges in Belgium. The choir was established in 2006 by fans of Cardiff Blues for the S4C series Codi Canu and they began their anniversary year by taking part in a new series coinciding with the 2015 Rugby World Cup where they were the resident choir in the Fanzone at Cardiff Arms Park.

During the year, they regularly sang at Cardiff Arms Park entertaining the spectators before the Blues home matches.

Later in the year they competed in the BBC Choir of the Year Competition and in the Cheltenham Performing Arts Festival, where they won first prize in the Folk Category.

They also took part in the recording of two editions of Dechrau Canu Dechrau Canmol and an edition of Noson Lawen from the National Eisteddfod pavilion, all for broadcasting on S4C.

A Gala Dinner Dance at St David’s Hotel, Cardiff Bay in June was followed in July by a Grand Concert at Llandaff Cathedral with the British Sinfonietta Orchestra.

The highlight of the celebrations took place in August with the choir tour to Belgium, holding cathedral concerts in Bruges and Ghent, and also performing in the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres. Musical Director, Richard Vaughan had composed a piece of music especially for the tour, to the words of ‘Rhyfel’ (War), a poem written by the Welsh poet Hedd Wyn, who was killed at the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. Performing this poignant piece at both concerts was a privilege, and having the opportunity to sing it at Hedd Wyn’s graveside was an emotional experience that will live long in the memory.

Côr y Gleision is committed to giving something back to the wider community and during this 10th anniversary year the choristers raised over £2,000 for their chosen charity, the Alzheimer’s society.
